Automatically link dependency chains

Automatically sync the Parent/Child links in the respective ALM tools when Parent/Child sticky notes are modeled via a Dependency.

Updated this week

What is a dependency chain?

A dependency chain is when a team shares a Dependency with another team to coordinate the work that needs to be completed to deliver a Feature. In this scenario the following happens:

  1. The team that owns the Feature, creates and shares a Dependency sticky note with another [Dependent On] team. The Dependency sticky note is linked to the Feature sticky note that this team has committed to deliver.

  2. The [Dependency On] team receiving the Dependency will accept or resolve the dependency by creating the relevant backlog [Work Item] sticky notes and link them to the Dependency.

  3. In piplanning.io we have then modeled and managed how the work related to the Dependency is being planned and scheduled.

Currently the relationship between the Feature sticky note and the Depends On Team User Story sticky notes are modeled in piplanning.io using the Dependency sticky note to chain these work items together. We refer to this as a Dependency chain.

PI Session tab #10 Links: Automatically link dependency chains setting

With the Automatically link dependency chains setting checked (enabled) the #10 Links tab, you can now automatically have those child Story sticky notes linked to the Parent Feature sticky note in the respective ALM Tool via the appropriate parent/child links. So, the ALM tool will remain update with the total number of child stories that are planned to complete that Feature.

This is an optional setting if this is how you want to manage the ART-level Feature work for auditing and governance perspective in the ALM tool.
