Tracking Dependencies

Tracking doesn’t stop after PI Planning, it is just as important during execution.

Ways to track Dependencies effectively

Not only during Planning but especially during PI Execution it is important to use the different Boards as "living" documents, track dependencies and add new ones, once discovered.

Stay on Track with Execution Mode
Switch to Execution Mode to focus on what matters during delivery: real-time progress, current status, and iteration tracking. See the current date on your boards, monitor iteration progress, and keep work moving with clarity. Execution Mode turns your planning into visible progress.

There are different ways and boards to maintain high alignment and fast resolution across teams, ARTs and stakeholders throughout the PI.

  • Use the Team Board during Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Plannings and other coordination meetings and actively talk about incoming and outgoing dependencies.

  • Use the ART Planning Board or Solution Planning Board to see and talk about dependencies.

  • Use the search and filter for relevant dependencies. For instance, you can filter for dependencies that are relevant for your team, planned to be done in iteration 2 and incoming (you rely on another team).

  • Ensure status on work items linked to the Dependency are up to date.

  • For external orgs, use dedicated Swimlanes for progress visibility.

Status Sync

Having a running sync between piplanning.io and your ALM-tool, the status will update automatically in piplanning.io when updated in your ALM-tool.

Track Progress

To track progress on Dependencies it is important that the delivering Team is linking their related work to the Dependency Sticky. Check out:

When the delivering team starts to work on the work items linked to the dependency, you'll see progress on the Dependency based on the status changes.
